Welcome to Hörby Marknad – Skånes oldest market!
Hörby Marknad is a festival for the people where the streets in central Hörby become a hub of people and visitors. In Hörby, we have arranged a market for over 270 consecutive years and Hörby Marknad is one of the oldest in Sweden. Hörby Marknad is a festival for the people with ancient origins. On the first (Wednesday) and Thursday of July every year, our streets are filled with people shopping, eating, meeting friends and enjoying themselves.
The special thing about Hörby Marknad is that it takes place in the middle of the village. Restaurants and market stalls are set up along all the streets and squares in the center, and the whole of Hörby is transformed into one big market, bubbling with life.
One of Skåne’s oldest markets
Hörby Marknad is one of Skåne’s and perhaps one of Sweden’s oldest markets, dating back to 1748. Central Hörby is filled with up to 100,000 happy visitors and over 400 vendors, a carnival and a small market with people selling smaller animals. You can also try running Marknadsloppet, cheered on by the entire market!
Market selling smaller animals
By tradition we start early Thursday morning with a small market selling smaller animals. Here you can usually find goats, rabbits, chickens and mini pigs. Children love to walk around this market, watching the animals, and a lot of the children from Hörby have chosen their first animal to bring home right here.
Marknadsloppet (A race during the market)
On Wednesday evening, Marknadsloppet is held. This race has been a part of the market days for over 50 years. The exercise race goes through and around the center of Hörby and there are three distances to choose from; 12.6, 6.1 and 3.4 km. For many, Marknadsloppet is a tradition not to be missed. You can find more information on the market race’s own website.
Information
01. Application
Applications for a spot at Hörby Marknad can be submitted from November of the year prior to the market event. Your application should clearly indicate the assortment you intend to sell at the location.
If you operate a so-called mobile business (which moves its operations to different locations) and determine that you cannot bring a cash register that meets the requirements during sales, you may instead issue a cash invoice to each customer. Mobile businesses include operations such as massage therapists, food carts, and flower vendors.
According to the rules of Skatteverket, a cash invoice must include specific information to be approved. This information includes the date of the sale, a description of the goods or services, the price including VAT, as well as the names and addresses of both the seller and the buyer. For more detailed information on what is required for a receipt to be considered valid, please visit Skatteverkets website.
1.a) Late application
Late application, meaning from two weeks before the first day of the market, incurs an additional fee per three meters for the spot, as well as an additional fee for food carts.
02. Information about your spot
2.a) Attendance and setup of market stands
• You must be on site by 10:00 AM on Wednesday. From 7:00 AM you have access to your spot to unpack and prepare your market stand.
• If your spot is empty by 10:00 AM it will be sold as a last minute spot. You will not receive a refund for that spot.
• If you cannot be present at the right time, please notify us no later than the day before.
• You may not start packing up or leave your market stand before 6:00 PM on Thursday. If you unpack after the market has opened or pack up before the market closes, you risk losing eligibility for a spot at the market the following year.
2.b) Size and arrangement of spots
The spots are 3 x 3 meters, with a few exceptions.
There are a limited number of spots available that allow for parking a car behind your market stand. This information is available on-site and cannot be reported afterward. Please note that the space for a car behind is never longer than the spot you have booked. If you have booked a 3 x 3 meter spot, your vehicle behind may not be longer than 3 meters.
For vendors with spots with cars behind it around Ernst Ahlgrensparken, it is not allowed to park cars on the gravel paths in the park.
2.c) Electricity and other facilities
Electricity (230V) is included in all spots. All connections for 3-phase electricity must be reported in advance.
There must be a clear passage of at least half a meter behind the spots. This means that tents may not be erected directly against a house wall, goods may not be stored on the surface, and it is not permitted to tie ropes or similar to anchor tents to walls or downpipes.
Tents may not be built closer than half a meter from the house wall and there must be a clear passage behind the tent.
Only tents, carts, and trailers are permitted. No structures or booths larger than 3 x 3 meters are allowed in the market area, with the exception for any booths that Hörby Municipality sets up for rental purposes.
2.d) One-day spots
No one-day spots are sold during Hörby Marknad.
2.e) Rights and rules for market spots
Hörby Municipality holds the rights to all market spots and therefore has the right to move or deny all vendors. Transfer of spot is not permitted. In the event of a business sale, the spot may only be included in the transfer after consultation with Hörby Municipality. Subletting is not allowed without the approval of Hörby Municipality to avoid unauthorized trading of spots. Hörby Municipality has the right to suspend both the vendor who lent out a spot and the one registered for the spot if lending has occurred without the Municipality knowledge and approval.
2.f) Placement and measurements of spots
Hörby Municipality clearly marks the spots on the market area. A standard spot measures 3 meters in width and 3 meters in depth, with a few exceptions where the spots are 3 meters in width and 4 meters in depth. The measurements of all spots are clearly marked on maps and in the booking system for vendors. Vendors must place all their equipment and materials within their spot according to the organizer’s markings and instructions. There will be staff on-site to direct vendors to their spots and assist if needed.
2.g) Rules for sales spots
The edge facing the neighbor may not be obstructed and must be kept clear of the counter’s awning pole.
When sales occur from a cart with doors that open towards the front edge, the doors may under no circumstances extend beyond the front edge of the spot. The entire setup, including the drawbar, must fit within the spot.
03. Sales and assortment
3.a) Assortment
The seller must specify the assortment to be sold and the category of the assortment when applying for a spot. The allocated spot is only valid for the assortment specified in the application. Selling other goods than those indicated in the application gives Hörby Municipality the right to evict the seller. Evicted sellers do not have the right to a refund of the spot rental fee.
Sellers who wish to change their assortment should consult Hörby Municipality’s vendor coordinator. If the change of assortment is approved, Hörby Municipality has the right to change the seller’s location to avoid conflict with other sellers of the same assortment.
There are goods that are prohibited by Swedish law, such as certain toys. These may not be sold at markets. It is the seller’s responsibility to follow laws and regulations regarding what can be sold and to stay updated on these laws and regulations.
3.b) Subscription sales
No subscription sales are allowed.
3.c) Food sales
Businesses that sell, serve, distribute, or otherwise handle food must have the necessary permits required for their operations. The regulations of Livsmedelslagen (2006:804) and Livsmedelsförordningen (2006:813), as well as regulations issued under these, apply to food sales. If you have a registration for an existing business, such as a restaurant, café, or store, that registration only applies to that business.
The same high standards for food safety apply to mobile operations as to stationary facilities. The design of the mobile operation must allow for good hygiene and safe food handling. There should be adequate facilities and arrangements for good hygiene, sufficient separation of food items, and proper temperature maintenance.
Permits for sales at markets, festivals, or fairs are only approved if explicitly stated in the registration. If permits are lacking and your business needs to apply or supplement the notification, this must be submitted to Bygg- och miljönämnden no later than two weeks before the relevant sales event.
Decisions regarding registration must be presented to the staff of the Bygg- och miljö during the market. Therefore, it is very important that you bring the decision with you. If the business starts without the required documentation being submitted to the Bygg- och miljönämnden, it may lead to sanctions.
Each business must have the following in place:
• Decision on registration.
• Self-monitoring program and a person responsible for the business.
For more detailed information on food handling in mobile operations, visit Livsmedelsverkets website.
Separate toilets for those handling food are marked near the market office in Ernst Ahlgrensparken, Bollhusgatan, and at Nya Torg. At Hörby IP there is also a separate shower with toilet available at designated times for those handling food. Access to running water and drinking water is available near Torggatan, Söderängen, Nya Torg, Bollhusgatan, and the market office.
Other important laws and regulations include:
- Förordning om engångsprodukter (SFS 2021:996)
- Livsmedelslagen (2006:804)
- Livsmedelsförordningen (2006:813)
- Hygienförordningen (EG) nr 852/2004)
- Förordning (EG) nr 853/2004
- Förordning (EG) nr 178/2002
Food vendors must offer at least one vegetarian option. Food vendors may not sell red-listed or endangered species.
3.d) Prohibited goods
It is prohibited to sell the following goods at the market:
• Products that incite hatred against a group of people, such as those with racist messages.
• Drug-related products.
• Products with pornographic content.
• Weapons and dangerous items, including knuckle dusters, throwing stars, switchblades and similar items.
• Firecrackers, fireworks, stink bombs, TRICKY-firecrackers, slingshots, projectiles, loud noise cap guns, arena trumpets, and sprays of all kinds, including fragrance sprays.
• Knives and other stabbing or cutting weapons, unless they are part of equipment for specific services or assignments and are well packaged.
• E-cigarettes.
• Toys that do not meet safety requirements, including those lacking CE-marking or proper labeling.
• Jewelry and other products containing prohibited chemicals, such as certain metals and phthalates.
Sellers are obligated to follow and stay updated on laws and regulations regarding prohibited goods in Sweden.
3.e) Vendor signage at the spots
Market vendors must have a clearly visible sign at their sales location displaying the business name, organization number, address, and phone number. According to GDPR, individual firms are not required to print their personal identification number on the sign, but they must have the information readily available upon request. Checks may occur during the market.
04. Electricity, gas, water, waste, and sanitary services
4.a) Electricity
Hörby Municipality provides electricity in the market area according to Elsäkerhetsverket requirements for temporary building electricity. Vendors who do not order 3-phase electricity in advance may be left without power if no access is available. Each spot rental of 3 meters includes 230V/300W. Electricity needs greater than 300W per 3 meters must be applied for and paid for separately.
Vendors must always use electrical materials and appliances approved for outdoor use by the Elsäkerhetsverket. Failure to comply may result in Hörby Municipality cutting off the electricity supply without compensation. Vendors must have at least 50 meters of their own approved cable for connection to the organizer’s electrical cabinets/substations. Power will be connected no later than 3:00 PM on the day before the first market day and will be turned off two hours after the market ends on the last day. Electrical cables may not border roads. Information about which electrical cabinet belongs to your spot can be found on Hörby Municipality’s website as well as at the market office. LED-lamps must be used; halogen lamps are not allowed.
• Sharing electricity from a neighbor’s outlet is prohibited.
• Heat fans are prohibited.
4.b) Gas usage
When using gas during Hörby Marknad, vendors must check the box for gas on the application form. We will provide a map/list to the authorities for their inspection. Note: You must still submit a gas application to Skånemitt Räddningstjänst.
4.c) Water
There will be opportunities to fill water containers during all market days. Access to running water and drinking water is available near Nya Torg, Bollhusgatan, Söderängen, Torggatan/Nygatan, Hembygdsstugan, and the market office. It is important not to take water from other sources; Hörby Municipality only samples from the specified sources.
4.d) Waste management
Hörby Municipality is pleased to present a new enclosed area at Nya Torg and Bollhusgatan, where you will find collection points for wastewater, recyclable bottles and cans, cooking oil, food waste, and sorting of metal, clear and colored glass packaging, plastic, cardboard, and possibly more fractions. This area will be monitored by staff throughout the market to ensure sorting is done according to applicable rules and regulations. Our staff will be on site to assist you and answer any questions regarding waste management. Remember that vendors are responsible for sorting their waste correctly. The area will be open from Tuesday at 1:00 PM until Thursday evening at 10:00 PM.
Laws and regulations:
• Avfallsförordningen (2020:614)
• Miljöbalken (1998:808)
• Förordning om engångsprodukter (SFS 2021:996)
Wastewater:
Hörby Municipality provides a location for the collection of wastewater near the market office/Ernst Ahlgrensparken, Bollhusgatan, and Nya Torg.
Latrine:
Hörby Municipality is only responsible for emptying public toilets available to vendors, the public, and food vendors. Hörby Municipality is also responsible for cleaning the public toilets during market days. The latrine from the vendor’s own caravan/motorhome is not the responsibility of Hörby Municipality. Hörby Municipality does not provide latrine emptying for private use during the market.
Cooking oil:
Hörby Municipality accepts cooking oil in sealed containers at the waste stations at Nya Torg and Bollhusgatan.
Regulation on Single-Use Products (Förordning om engångsprodukter) (SFS 2021:996)
Vendors handling food must follow the laws and regulations established for this type of operation. ”Vendors can offer fast food and drinks in reusable cups and containers and inform their customers about the negative environmental impact of plastic according to förordningen om engångsprodukter (SFS 2021:996)”. Vendors must also accept any containers that visitors wish to use for their food and/or drinks.
Vendor’s responsibility:
The vendor is responsible for all handling related to their own waste. If the waste causes permanent damage/stains to properties or other locations, the vendor will bear all costs for cleaning/preparation.
4.e) Toilets
Hörby Municipality provides toilets for vendors from the evening before the first market day until the market closes. Toilets will be available around the clock during this period in the market area.
At Nya Torg, Ernst Ahlgrensparken (at the market office), Hörby IP, and Bollhusgatan, several toilets will be available throughout the market, with at least one in each area designated solely for food vendors. These are the only toilets that may be used by vendors handling food. The code for the toilets will be provided upon request. In each area there is also a toilet designated for other vendors.
Public toilets are available in the park by the market office, Gamla Torg, Bollhusgatan, Söderängen, and at Nya Torg. Vendors may not relieve themselves in any location other than designated toilets.
4.f) Shower
All market vendors have access to a shower with toilet facilities at Hörby IP (Parkgatan 22, 242 35 Hörby) from Tuesday at 4:00 PM until Thursday, with shower hours from 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM. In the same area, there is also a separate shower with toilet for those handling food. Please note that alarms will sound at other times.
4.g) Cleaning
Hörby Municipality ensures that the market area is kept clean during the event. Trash bags and collection sacks are available at the market office, with one per vendor per day distributed upon request.
Vendors must keep their market spot clean during market days, and all litter must be transported to the containers in the area. Containers are available at Nya Torg, Bollhusgatan, and Söderängen. Everyone must clean their sales area after the market ends. Hörby Municipality will charge vendors who leave their area uncleaned.
05. Payment and refunds
5.a) Payment and invoicing
Once Hörby Municipality has approved your spot application an invoice for the registration fee, which is 20% of the price of the spot, will be sent. This fee is charged to prevent spots from being booked but not used. Please note that the registration fee is non-refundable, regardless of when the cancellation occurs. The registration fee must be received by Hörby Municipality within 10 days of the application approval.
Afterwards an invoice for the remaining balance will be sent, which must be paid by May 31. For spot bookings made after May 31 payment can only be made via direct payment, either by card or Swish.
Invoices can be paid earlier if preferred. The invoice will include the rules for the market. When you receive the invoice for the reserved spot, you have ten days from the invoice date to dispute it.
If the invoice is not disputed within this period, you are obligated to pay the issued invoice for the requested and reserved spot. By paying the invoice, you agree to the rules and agreements set by Hörby Municipality. This means a legally binding contract has been established, which cannot be broken without mutual consent from both parties.
5.b) Refund of spot rental
If the vendor has not occupied their spot by 10:00 AM on the first market day and has not notified of a later arrival, Hörby Municipality has the right to sell the spot to another vendor. In this case, no refund of the spot rental will be provided, except in cases of valid reasons such as illness or mechanical failure on the way to the market.
Valid reasons for illness must be documented with a medical certificate. Mechanical failure or similar must be supported by a receipt from the repair shop that conducted the repairs.
• If the vendor cancels their spot at least 30 days before the first market day, the entire paid spot rental will be refunded.
• If cancellation occurs between 29 and 14 days before the first market day, 50% of the paid spot rental will be refunded. If the spot rental has not yet been paid at the time of cancellation between 29 and 14 days before the first market day, the vendor must pay 50% of the spot rental.
• No refund will be provided for cancellations made within 13 days of the first market day. If the spot rental has not yet been paid at the time of cancellation within 13 days before the first market day, the vendor must pay 100% of the spot rental.
For all refunds, regardless of timing, the organizer will charge an administrative fee for processing the spot rental refund. The registration fee paid by vendors upon booking is non-refundable.
06. Parking and overnight stay
6.a) Parking
Parking for vendors
Hörby Municipality offers parking at Söderängen for vendors who have not applied for a sales spot with vehicle access behind. Please note that you cannot request more linear meters for your vehicle than what your reserved spot allows.
If you have not reserved a spot with vehicle access behind, you are not permitted to park your vehicle within the market area. Vehicles belonging to vendors without a reserved spot with vehicle access behind are directed to the following parking locations:
– Hörby IP (Parkgatan 22, 242 35 Hörby)
– Söderängen (accessible via Strömgatan)
Disabled parking
Vendors and visitors with disabilities are directed to designated disabled parking spaces available near the market area. These spots are clearly marked and located close to the main entrances to the market to facilitate accessibility. Please ensure that a valid disabled parking permit is visibly displayed in the vehicle.
6.b) Overnight stay
Vendors wishing to stay overnight in a caravan are directed to the following campsites:
– Jägersbo Camping (Höör)
– Ringsjöstrand Camping (Hörby)
– Söderängen in Hörby – Provided by Hörby Municipality, see information below.
Camping area at Söderängen
Important information for those choosing to stay overnight at the Söderängen camping area in Hörby:
• The distance between caravans must be at least four meters.
• Toilets are available in connection with the camping area at Söderängen for all who use the campsite.
• Electricity is available at all spots.
• Caravan space must be indicated as an addition in the application for a spot at Hörby Market.
• Entrance to Söderängen camping area is via Strömgatan.
07. Safety and security
Hörby Municipality is actively working to ensure safety and security before, during, and after Hörby Marknad. Safety and security are of utmost importance during events like Hörby Marknad. As organizers, we have a responsibility to create a safe environment for all participants, including visitors, vendors, and staff. By actively working on safety and security, we can prevent accidents, manage emergency situations effectively, and ensure that everyone can enjoy the market without worry. This work also contributes to maintaining order and a pleasant atmosphere, which is essential for a successful event.
7.a) Market streets and emergency routes
The market streets are sufficiently wide to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Before the market opens, emergency vehicles will drive through the streets to ensure the proper width is maintained, should an emergency arise during the market. To maintain safety, sales are only allowed within designated spots and walkways must not be cluttered with goods. This is important for both safety and out of consideration for visitors and colleagues. Vendors who do not follow these rules and fail to comply after being warned risk being removed without entitlement to a refund of the spot rental.
7.b) Parking and vehicles
No vehicles are allowed to remain on the market streets overnight. In the event of an emergency during the night, emergency vehicles would be unable to pass parked cars. Therefore, it is strictly prohibited to park vehicles on market streets overnight.
7.c) General safety
To ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants, all vendors are encouraged to follow the instructions provided by the market’s security personnel. Any safety incidents or hazardous situations should be immediately reported to the market office or on-site security personnel.
7.d) Surveillance
Vendors are always responsible for their own property within the market area. Hörby Municipality hires security guards who primarily patrol Nya Torg and Bollhusgatan on Wednesday evening and night but also patrol the area periodically.
08. Miscellaneous/Other
8.a) Code of Conduct
Vendors who violate these regulations and rules will immediately lose their right to their spot and, upon request from the organizer or their representative, must promptly close their operations, pack up their goods, and leave the market area without any form of compensation. Such vendors will not be offered a spot at future markets.
8.b) Obligation to follow the organizer’s instructions
Hörby Municipality holds ultimate responsibility for order and safety in the market area. Accordingly, it is the vendor’s duty to comply with instructions from Hörby Municipality on matters related to order. Repeated non-compliance will result in removal from the market without any right to a refund of spot rental fees.
Hörby Municipality reserves the right to close the market for safety reasons if conditions are deemed to pose a danger to vendors’ or visitors’ life, health, or property. This applies as well if authorities mandate the market’s closure. In these cases, force majeure applies and vendors are not entitled to any refund of rental fees or charges.
It is the responsibility of the market vendor to adhere to regulations and comply with instructions from the organizer, security personnel, and other market staff. Any complaints should be directed to the market office.
8.c) Liability insurance
All vendors are responsible for having liability insurance.
8.d) Protected water source area
Show environmental consideration to ensure no spillage of chemicals or similar substances that could contaminate the groundwater source. Any environmental incident should be immediately reported to the market office for prompt remediation actions.

Businesses that sell, serve, distribute or otherwise handle food must have the necessary permits required for their operations.
Decisions regarding registration must be presented to the staff of the Bygg- och miljö during the event. Therefore, it is very important that you bring the decision with you. If the business starts without the required documentation being submitted to the Bygg- och miljönämnden, it may lead to sanctions.
Each business must have the following in place:
- Decision on registration.
- Self-monitoring program and a person responsible for the business.

The registration fee must be received by Hörby Municipality within 10 days of the application approval.
Afterwards an invoice for the remaining balance will be sent, which must be paid no later than 30 days before the event. For spot bookings made later than 30 days before the event, payment can only be made via direct payment, either by card or Swish.
Invoices can be paid earlier if preferred. The invoice will include the rules for the event. When you receive the invoice for the reserved spot, you have ten days from the invoice date to dispute it.
